Week of October 14, 2019

We hope that everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving weekend and were able to spend time with families and friends!   We do have much to be grateful for!

Congratulations to our Grade 4 students!  On October 10th, our Grade 4 students received the Good News.  Thank you to our families, teachers and Father Ross for their support on their special day!

Fundraiser!!  Many thanks to our Catholic Parents Advisory Council who have kicked off our fundraiser for the school year.  Each year, we rely on our school fundraiser and because of your support, we were able to purchase new athletic jerseys, paint a new gym mural, support Grade 8 Graduation, Shrove Tuesday, pay for busses to attend mass at St. Patrick’s Church, and replenish classroom equipment for student use. This year, we will be selling Domino’s Pizza coupons and pepperoni, beef jerky, and summer sausage from Carmichael Meats.  Pizza coupons must be sold by October 17th for delivery of October 18th and meat products are due October 25th.  All orders are on school cashonline to make it easier for you! This year we would like to focus on purchasing some new technology for our Library Learning Commons!   Every little bit helps and we thank you for making Christ the King even better!

Rosary Liturgy:  October is the month of the Rosary in honour of our Blessed Virgin Mary.   Please join us at Christ the King at 10:30 this Wednesday for our Rosary Celebration.  Father Ross will be leading us and all parents are invited to join us!

Picture Day is this Friday!  Don’t forget to bring your smiles to school on Friday, October 18th.  All students will be photographed!

CTK School Agendas!!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We have great news to share……… our school agendas have arrived!

The agendas for students in grades 1-6 have arrived and have been distributed today. However, we are still waiting for the grade 7 and 8 school  agendas.

I know teachers as well as  students and parents are excited to get started using the agendas as this is such an essential tool and is used as a way of communication from school to home, and home to school, students keep themselves organized and on track by recording important dates and school information.

Thank you for your patience !

Possible CUPE Full Strike Monday, October 7

This morning, I read an announcement over the PA system that informed our students about the potential job action.  Here is what was communicated to your child:

Some of you may have already heard from your families or friends or from the news that there is a possibility of a strike affecting our school, beginning on Monday morning.  If there is a strike, it means that some of our school staff will not be coming to work.   We hope and pray that this will not happen – but if it does, it means our school will have to close until the strike is over, and you will not be able to come to school.  We are doing our best to make sure your families have as much information about this situation as possible. They can keep up to date by visiting the school board’s website.  If our school does have to close on Monday, we hope it will only be closed for a short time and we can all be back together in our classrooms soon.”

In the event of a CUPE strike on Monday, October 7th parents are asked to check their normal media outlets as they would in the event of an inclement weather school closure.  Updates are also available on our Board website https://www.wcdsb.ca/about-us/labour-updates/

Sincerely,

Mrs. Sica

Potential Full CUPE Strike- Monday, October 7, 2019

Dear Parent or Guardian,

On Wednesday, September 25th, 2019, we received word that CUPE would be initiating a “work to rule” campaign in all of our schools and workplaces on Monday, September 30th, 2019.  We are writing today to provide an update on the CUPE strike action which is currently taking place in our schools.

At WCDSB CUPE represents the following working groups:  Administrative Assistants, Early Childhood Educators, Educational Assistants, Personal Support Works, Child and Youth Workers, Lunch Hour Supervisors, Library Technicians, Communicative Disorder Assistants, Payroll and Accounting Associates and Computer Technicians.  In each case CUPE had informed us of “struck work”, which are duties that might otherwise be performed by these individuals, which is no longer occurring.

In all cases, our school safety and a Christ-centred learning environment remains of paramount importance to us, and our administrators are working diligently to ensure that we are compensating as best we can for the duties not being performed.  Having said that, it is important for all to acknowledge that it is not “business as usual” across the board, and in some cases compromises have been required, until we are through the job action.

This morning we received notice that a full CUPE strike may commence on Monday October 7th, if an agreement is not reached this weekend.  If the strike proceeds, this will mean CUPE members will not report to work.  As CUPE represents 1100 of our school based staff, we would not be able to safely operate our schools.  Therefore, IF the strike proceeds, we will be proceeding to closing our schools commencing Monday October 7th, 2019.

The declaration of and continuation of the strike is a result of central (provincial-level) negotiations and decisions that will be made at that level.  At WCDSB we do not currently control the decisions regarding the strike or its remedy.  Sincere there is a possibility that schools may be closed for an indefinite period of time, we recommend that you immediately begin making alternate plans for the care of your children, in the event that the strike proceeds.

We hope you find this update helpful.  Please note that updates are regularly being posted to our website www.wcdsb.ca and there is a Frequently Asked Questions section there as well, which may prove helpful.  In the meanwhile, we offer our prayers that CUPE and the government are able to reach a fast, fair and respectful collective agreement.

Sincerely yours,

Loretta Notten

Director of Education
