Fire Drill, Lockdown & Dance a Thon October 29th

This week we were able to complete a Lockdown and Fire Drill.

The Fire Drill was completed today in an orderly fashion in 3 minutes 59 seconds! Thankfully, as it was a wee bit nippy today.

Tomorrow, we will be moving the Dance a Thon to the gym. There will be no more than 3 classes in the gym, each with their own separate area.

It is not too late to participate in this fundraiser through Cash Online.

Stay safe,

Mrs MacDonald

Halloween Dance A Thon Reminders & Costume Guidelines

We are excited to join in the FUN of Halloween together as a school community once again this year on this coming Friday the 29th . Thank you, thank you and thank you to our many families that have donated to the Halloween Dance a Thon. There will be some random prizes through out the day! It is not too late to get your donation in on School Cash Online! Please help us help our school community.

Halloween takes place this year on Sunday, October 31st. The Catholic Register reminds us that Halloween actually derives from “All Hallows’ Eve,” which is another way of saying, “Holy Evening” to indicate the night before All Saints’ Day. “Hallow” is an old English word for “saint” and it is often used to describe something becoming holy. Therefore, Halloween is meant to be preparation for All Saints’ Day, which is a Holy Day of Obligation that takes place on the day after Halloween on November 1st. As well, in the Catholic Tradition, All Souls Day is on November 2nd so there are many opportunities with the context of our Catholic Faith Tradition to make links and connections to Halloween.

Students at Christ the King School are invited to wear costumes on Friday October 29th if families choose. Students are also welcomed to wear Halloween colours (orange and black) as this is a traditional way to participate also.

To ensure that all our students have a fun and safe day, and given all the new COVID related safety concerns, there are a few additional guidelines that I would like all parents/students to follow in addition to the ones already in place.

Halloween @ CTK Safety Reminders

  • Covid-19 Safety Protocols – Screening happens at home to determine if it is safe to send our Gators to school that day … and ALL Waterloo Region Public Health COVID-19 Safety Protocols are in place and BIG THREE are KEY: 1. Physical Distancing, 2. Wearing Masks, and 3. Hand Hygiene
  • COSTUMES – Costumes should be comfortable and not be such that they interfere with classroom activities – some great learning activities will happen throughout the day and students must be able to sit, walk, breathe, see, hear, and play outside at recesses … no inflatable costumes please
  • Hand held Props and Full Costume Masks that go with Halloween Outfits – may NOT be worn for large periods of time re safety and learning being the priority – again, we will still need to wear our normal safety masks as per the Public Health COVID-19 Safety Protocols is a priority
  • FOOD – Health and Anaphylaxis Guidelines – FOOD – Health and Anaphylaxis Guidelines – At ALL times, we are not permitted to serve food sent from home to students while at school. Board Health and Allergy Guidelines mandate this, as well as our parents wanting to know what their children are eating.
  • Costumes Should be Tasteful for a School Setting – there are lots of great costumes (princesses, superheroes, movie characters, ghosts, etc.) and should not be too provocative (e.g., gratuitous violence, lots of blood) or employ questionable messages or props and must NOT be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, gender identity, heritage, race, ethnicity, or religion and please NO Weapons – Fake Weapons of any kind are NOT permitted
  • Our students, staff and families are #wcdsbawesome and our goal is simply to have a FUN and SAFE Day! We are a school with children from ages 3-14 and must recognize the well-being of all and understand our older students may wear more scary costumes when they are out with their peers on Halloween … again, we wish everyone a SAFE and “Happy Halloween” as we know the children, young and old, will be excited to head out on Sunday, October 31st.

Student Census Update

The WCDSB Student Census is an online survey that collects data specifically related to self-identity, demographics, and experiences at school. The WCDSB Student Census is a confidential and voluntary survey for all students in Grades 4 to 12. The goal of the Student Census is to better understand the diversity of students within the WCDSB and to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, social and demographic makeup of our students.

This work is mandated for all school boards in Ontario under the Provincial Anti-Racism Act (ARA s.6(2)). The census will allow us to gain detailed insight as to the cultural, social and demographic makeup of our students and will be used to identify/eliminate systemic barriers. This is a valuable opportunity for us to learn more about the students we support and help us to identify differences and gaps in our students’ experiences and outcomes, based on their diverse needs.

The Student Census includes questions about:
• Indigenous Identity
• First Languages
• Ethnic/Cultural Background
• Racial Identity
• Citizenship Status
• Religious/Spiritual Affiliation
• Gender At Birth/Gender Identity (9-12)
• Sexual Orientation (9-12)
• Challenges (e.g., ADHD, Hearing Impairment)
• Household Characteristics
• School Experiences (e.g., Belonging)

The Student Census supports many curriculum connections. Some of which include:
• Transferable Skills (All Curriculum 1-12): Global Citizenship and Sustainability
• Family Life (Grade 1-8): Living In Relationship B2 Exploring Human Nature
• Social Studies (Grade 1-6): Vision and Goals of the Program

All students from grades 4 through 12, regardless of their learning modality (e.g., face-to-face, virtual), are invited to participate. We offer the survey online, however, a paper format is available upon request through the school Administrator. The survey will be taken during class time and devices will be made available.

The Student Census is voluntary. Parents/Guardians of students under the age of 18 can request their child be exempt by completing the opt-out form available on the Student Census webpage before October 22, 2021.

Further, in November, any student may choose not to participate, to stop participating, or to skip a question at any time, regardless of whether their parents/guardians consented. If you have questions or comments about the WCDSB Student Census, please contact the school Principal or WCDSBResearch@wcdsb.ca and one of the Census team staff members will respond shortly.

Christ the King CES classes will complete the Student Census between November 1 – 12, 2021.

School Vaccine Program Update

October 18,2021

From: Region of Waterloo Public Health

RE:  School Vaccine Program Update

Dear Parent/Legal Guardian:

Since the Spring of 2020, the school vaccination program has been suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Public Health will be restarting the program on November 1, 2021.    Appointments will open for booking on October 18, 2021.  Most clinics will be outside of school and work hours at Public Health offices located at 99 Regina Street South, Waterloo and 150 Main Street, Cambridge.

Planning is also underway to reach students who may not be able to access the two Public Health fixed clinic locations.  Details about additional mobile clinics will be communicated as soon as they are finalized.

If your child is in Grade 7, 8 or 9 during the 2021/2022 school year, they are eligible to receive their school program vaccines or complete the series if they have already started them.

If you have previously declined these immunizations or have a legal exemption on file at Public Health, please disregard this letter.

Typically, each school year, Grade 7 students have an opportunity to receive the following three vaccines in school-based clinics.  Please note that the meningococcal ACYW-135 vaccine is required for school attendance under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA).  Although the Immunization of School Pupils Act has not been enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic, students’ immunization records will be reviewed in the future for vaccines required by the Act.

·         Hepatitis B (2 dose series)

·         Meningococcal ACYW-135 (Menactra®)

·         Human Papillomavirus (HPV) (Gardasil®-9) (2 dose series)

Please note that Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines require 2 doses to fully protect against these diseases.  Menactra® is provided as a one-time dose and a second dose is not required to complete vaccination.  Some children may have already received a meningococcal vaccine prior to age 12 (usually at 1 year of age).  The grade 7 immunization with Menactra® is still recommended to provide protection against strains not included in the earlier vaccine.

Next Steps:

If you wish to have your student complete these vaccinations, please do the following:
  1. Ensure your students’ vaccination records are up to date:
  • Before booking an appointment, ensure that all vaccinations received from your health care provider or other vaccination clinics have been reported to Public Health
  • Parents/students can access immunization records and submit immunization information via ICON (https://bit.ly/3v9rwPT) or by calling 519-575-4400 5001 (Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm)
  • Your student’s Health Card Number is needed to view their immunization record. If you do not have a health card, you can use the Ontario Immunization Identification (OIID) usually found on your child’s report card
  1. Book your students’ vaccination appointment:
** Please note that appointments will be released in blocks every 2 weeks over the next year.  Public Health greatly appreciates your patience as we work to get students across the Region caught up**

Vaccine Exemptions (For Meningococcal Vaccine Only):
  • You may decide for medical, religious or philosophical reasons not to immunize your child. In this case, your will need to provide a written vaccine exemption for the Meningococcal vaccine, one of the vaccines required for attendance at school
  • For medical exemptions, a legal Statement of Medical Exemption must be forwarded to Public Health. Please call 519-575-4400  5001 if you wish to submit a Statement of Medical Exemption
  • Public Health is not currently processing non-medical vaccine exemptions (statements of conscience). Additional information will be communicated to parents once the non-medical exemption process has been restarted
**Note:  Public Health does not issue COVID-19 vaccine exemptions.  Please contact your family physician, pharmacist, allergist or nurse practitioner if you require written documentation.

If you have questions about the School Vaccine Program catch-up process, please call 519-575-4400 ext. 5001.

Sincerely,

Kristy Wright, RN BScN
