We  thank parent council and other parent volunteers who provided and cooked for students on Shrove Tuesday/ Pancake Tuesday. Pancakes were delivered to classes throughout the day as a special snack. On Wednesday we had Ash Wednesday lead by our celebrant, Father Joe and Pink Shirt day for anti-bullying.  It was a wonderful way to kick off the Lenten season of 2023

Attendance – Use our 24 hour hotline

Please note that Liz is off on a medical leave for an extended amount of time. We ask that you do not email Liz with your child’s attendance to respect her time off and that you instead  use our 24 hour Attendance hotline – 519-621-6680. Thank you for your cooperation. Please keep Liz in your prayers.

Earthquake Fundraising

As many of you know, WCDSB has a long tradition of fundraising to assist relief efforts when natural disasters strike.

The devastation of the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria has once again called us to action.

While rescue and recovery efforts continue, it has already been confirmed that more than 35,000 people have died.

Many thousands more — including many current refugees — are in desperate need of shelter, food, clean water, and medicine.

Consequently, the Senior Team and Board of Trustees would like to invite all WCDSB students and staff to participate in a centralized fundraising campaign via the Canadian Red Cross (operating under the umbrella of the International Red Cross).

Donations of ANY AMOUNT will support the range of emergency services the Red Cross is delivering to those in need including interim housing, clothing, food, and other essential supplies.

All fundraising efforts will be collected centrally using the following link: Donations – Earthquake in Turkey & Syria

How to Participate:

·       The deadline to participate is Friday, March 10

·       The link will deposit the funds into a central board office account

Student Responsible Use of Technology

The WCDSB supports the benefits that technology can offer for students in their learning activities and student achievement. At the beginning of the year, all families were asked to read and sign our responsible use of technology guidelines to ensure information technology (IT) resources are being used in a safe and responsible manner. As we enter into Term 2 please take a moment to review the following links with your children.

Grade JK-3 – Grade-JK-3-Responsible-Use-of-Technology

Grade 4-8 – Grade-4-8-Responsible-Use-of-Technology

It is also part of our Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations to be positive digital citizens too.

Promoting Well Being: The opportunity of Black History Month

February is Black History Month and it’s a time to enhance the rich and diverse history of African and Black culture. It’s also a time to highlight much of the Black excellence that occurs every day in our school communities. These explorations are not limited to this month, but rather quite the opposite. It is important for all of us to consider the achievements of Canadian Black history throughout the year.

At the same time, we must also reflect on and take action around the roles we all play in upholding practices, policies, and structures that perpetuate systemic anti-Black racism in our systems, including within our schools, which are often barriers to good mental health and well-being for Black students.

Resources to support ongoing learning and engagement about Black history, anti-Black Racism, and mental health

While we all find unique ways to mark Black History Month, let’s also consider how our approaches impact the mental health and well-being, of ourselves and others. Below are resources, including some from School Mental Health Ontario, to help support our school community to engage in meaningful conversation, engagement, and action.

·       These activities can help you educate about anti-Black racism. https://experiencescanada.ca/anti-racism-conversations/anti-racism-conversations-learning-resources/

·       Knowledge Bookstore is a Canadian bookstore where you can find books with positive representations of Black characters.  https://www.knowledgebookstore.com/

Medical Concerns

If your child has any medical concerns, please ensure that you inform the school. Information may be shared directly with the classroom teacher /office. If medication is required, forms will be sent for completion by parents and the family doctor. All information is held in confidence.

Medication

School staff cannot administer medication, including aspirins and Tylenol without a “Request and Consent for Administration of Medication” form, completed and signed by a doctor. A properly labeled container is required, including the instructions and conditions that are to be followed for the administration of the medication for the safety of the child. Parents of children with life threatening medical concerns/allergies are asked to notify Ms. Almanza in the school office and fully complete an Emergency Medication Protocol form each September and return it to the school as soon as possible. All medication is stored in the office area. The only exception to this requirement has to do with any child who, because of life threatening allergies, must carry medication.

On-Going Fundraising Program

We’re very excited to announce that we’ve chosen to be a part of the Plantables Fundraising Program for 2023. With the weather warming up and many of you thinking about rolling up your sleeves and getting back into the garden, it’s a great time to help us spread the word of this great fundraiser.

What Is Plantables?

Plantables is an exciting family-owned company based in Forest, Ontario that grow healthy, hardy and happy fruit and vegetable plants.  The best part is, they ship them DIRECTLY to your door, when you want them!

That means that no matter how busy you are, how unsuccessful (successful!) you’ve been at growing plants before, you’ll be able to grow brag-worthy fruits and veggies!

All you have to do is pick what plants you want to grow, choose when you want them delivered and wait for your box of garden-ready plants to arrive on your doorstep. Shipping weeks are available from April- June and you can order any time before that.

How does the program work?

All you have to do is help spread the plant love! Tell everybody you know to go to plantables.ca and make sure they enter the code CTK at the checkout or follow our direct link plantables.ca/for/ctk

We’re really excited to be launching a fundraiser that involves growing healthy fruits and veggies and spending time as a family!  There is a minimum order requirement of 6 seedlings as they ship in multiples of 6 – if you are still interested in taking part but have an order smaller than 6 plants or if you require more information, please contact CTKPlants@gmail.com.

Thank you for all of your support, we can’t wait to see what you grow!

Today is National Pink Shirt Day…wear your pink Bobcats!

Wednesday, February 22nd is National Pink Shirt Day. We invite all staff and students to wear pink shirt for bullying awareness. Pink Shirt Day is to honour a Grade 9 male student from a small town in Nova Scotia who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to his school. A couple of students that he went to school with decided to take a stand against the bullies and wear pink shirts as well as hand them out for other students to wear.

Thank you, Pancake Volunteers!

Good Morning Bobcats!

The school had a smell of warm vanilla…thanks to our parent volunteers who cooked for pancakes for all of our students for Shrove Tuesday today!

Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who set up early this morning, who were mixing, cooking, delivering, “syrup-ing” and cleaning up today! With your help, we were able to deliver over 500 pancakes, all before 10:00 AM in the morning! What an amazing event!

Lent begins tomorrow with our Ash Wednesday celebration. Father Joe will be leading us in our celebration.

And to add to this…it’s pink shirt day tomorrow!

What a great start of the week for our Bobcats!

Reminders for the Week of Feb 17

Reminders for the Week:

We look forward to another new week and a time to enjoy our families on Family Day after enjoying some Valentine’s celebrations, a day of remembering to love one another and to be kind. Thank you to Bobcats family for their support of our candy grams which will assist with Grade 8 graduation.

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. ~ John 15:12

Monday, February 2oth is FAMILY DAY! (No School)

Do you sometimes feel like there is no time left to just enjoy and be with the family in our busy days? Since 2008 Family Day has been celebrated in Ontario on the 3rd Monday of the month. There is NO school this day! This is a day to step away from other duties and distractions for a moment and just be together. Embrace the time and find joy in the small but beautiful moments with your family.

Shrove Tuesday/Ash Wednesday Liturgy

On Tuesday, February 21st, School Council and other parent volunteers will be making pancakes for all students at Christ the King. These pancakes will be only a small snack size portion. Students will still need to have breakfast in the morning and be sent with their regular snacks and lunch that day. Please send a Tupperware container and cutlery to school with your child that day as we are trying to be eco-friendly. We could really use more parent volunteers to help make pancakes in the morning. If you are able to help us out kindly call the office and let us know.

Big thanks to the parent council and parent volunteers for making this happen for our Bobcats!

Our Ash Wednesday Liturgy will take place on February 22, 2023 at 12:30 pm for our school in the gym with Father Joe presiding.

Pink Shirt Day

February 22nd is Pink Shirt Day; an initiative that started in Nova Scotia, spread across Canada, and is now observed annually around the globe. The purpose of Pink Shirt Day is to take stand against bullying and be an advocate for kindness and inclusivity.

Staffing Update:

Mrs. Magliocco is off on a medical leave until April 3rd. We welcome Ms. Scott who will be filling in for Mrs. Magliocco. Ms. Scott is a retired teacher and comes with much knowledge and expertise! Welcome, Ms. Scott to CTK!

Student Safety:

Peanut and Other Life-Threatening Allergies, Sabrina’s Law Anaphylaxis Reaction

As we begin the new school year, we would like to inform you that CTK is an allergen aware school. There are pupils in attendance at our school who suffer from severe and life-threatening allergies to certain foods. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe and life-threatening reactions. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life-threatening allergic reaction. We would appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community by NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain peanuts/nut products. We want Christ the King Catholic School to be a safe environment for all students. Thank you for your assistance with this initiative.

If your child has been diagnosed with an allergy and you have not notified the school, please do so immediately. There are forms that must be completed.

A written communication will be sent to the parents/caregivers of children notifying them of the nature of a life-threatening allergy when it is specific to their child’s classroom. Your continued cooperation in support of our efforts to create a safe and healthy learning environment for all is greatly appreciated!
