This year, Ash Wednesday falls on the same day as Valentine’s Day. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. Regarding Lent, the Ordo says: “The Church encourages penitential practices that are external and social, reflecting the circumstances of individuals and communities.” The Memorial of Saint Valentine was removed from the official Roman Calendar back in the 1960s. February 14th, the feast day of St. Valentine because it is taken to be his date of martyrdom, is actually an optional memorial in the Church, meaning that Conferences of Bishops can choose to include this in the liturgical calendar for their country. The Canadian Bishops have not chosen this option. Ash Wednesday, as the first day of Lent, always take precedence over any other memorial for that day.
Please note that classroom Valentine activities will be celebrated on: TUESDAY FEBRUARY 13th. We will also be celebrating Shrove Tuesday on February 13th and students will be served pancakes. Please make sure your child still brings a lunch on Tuesday.
If you are going to send in Valentine’s to share, please do so on Tuesday, Feb.13th. Please remember that we have many students with allergies that can not eat treats so non-food items such as pencils, tattoos, and stickers or cards are preferred. Thanks for your understanding.
