Reminders for the Upcoming Week

It is not your duty to be average. It is your duty to set a higher example for others to follow.”  – Lincoln Alexander

Our students are so amazing at Christ the King school.

Fridays continue to be the day we celebrate students who show their greatness at school! Students receive Catch-A-kid tickets for a variety of positive behaviours including: playing safely, being respectful, using manners and kind words and showing the safety expectations in a school, such as lining up so students are not bumped, walking through the hallways, etc.  We celebrate students school wide each week with a little prize and certificate. At the end of each month we have a draw for two students to receive a gift certificate.

Here are some Reminders:

School Safety – Drop off and Pick up

The drop off and pick up of students is becoming a serious area of concern and we need YOUR help to make it safe. Messages have been posted throughout the school year on NewsWire reminding caregivers that our school parking lot is for staff and busses and to park safely (and according to road signage) and walk your child in to school. Thank you to the drivers who have been compliant.

We ask that you obey all traffic signage for parking and avoid parking in front of our gates so that our bus and staff can get through.

We are extremely thankful to those families that continue to walk to school as this is the safest mode and decreases traffic and congestion around the school.

Thank you for your support of our student safety.

MDI (Middle Years Development Instrument) Survey

Before the March Break, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) will be conducting school climate surveys to collect information from students and families. While the Ministry of Education requires all school districts to conduct these surveys (Education Act s.169.1(1)(a), (a.1), (a.2) and PPM 145), we are committed to providing a safe, caring, and inclusive place for everyone in our schools.

The MDI will be administered to students from Grade 4 through to Grade 12, between February 15th and March 8th. The MDI is an anonymous and voluntary online survey and will take place during class time on a board provided device with their classroom teacher.

A letter was sent to you last week (Friday) with the option for you to have your child opt out of the survey. The notice must be provided to the school or using the online opt-out form by February 8th.. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Reminders for the Week – January 19th

Reminders for the Week

In worship, we make it possible for the Lord to transform us by His love, to kindle light amid our darkness, to grant us strength in weakness and courage amid trials” – Pope Francis

Welcome to a wonderful new week at Christ the King. We had a great first week back and we look forward to continuing the trend as the weeks tick by.

With a new year, we always take the time to reset and remember that our primary purpose at school is to be kind and caring human beings who reflect the gospel values of our Faith. This means that every person, uniquely created in the Image of God, is to be loved and respected for exactly who they are, no more no less and we show this love through kind acts and words and by being caring family members. Our Catholic Graduate Expectation focus for this month is being a reflective, creative, and holistic thinker.

We welcome to Mr. Kelley who will be teaching Itinerant Music to our intermediate students (to fill in for Sean O’Brien who is off on a leave)

Here are some Reminders:

Friday, January 19th – PD -Day – no school for students

Staff will be working on assessment during the PD Day.

February Pizza Orders

January 22 – 26: Mental Health Anti-Stigma Week (formerly Bell Let’s Talk Day)

The theme this year is: There is no problem too big or too small to reach out and ask for help. At WCDSB, we believe every student should understand the concept of Mental Health, be comfortable talking about Mental Health in their classroom, and know-how and to whom they can ask for help. During this week, students will be engaged in activities in their classroom and daily conversation where students can learn about developing their own personal plan to care for their mental health, notice when they might need help and develop their own circle of support. These daily discussions are intended to open conversations about mental health in your classrooms to reduce stigma. Just as our pastoral plan intentionally connects and guides our faith journey with our lived experiences and allows our community to reflect and be responsive to our current needs, it is our hope that we can use our lived experiences and knowledge of mental health to Strengthen in us a greater understanding, acceptance, and inclusion

of those struggling with their mental health while students Strengthen their support plan.

Here is what we are doing as a school to support the activities in the classrooms:

Monday: Whole School Meditation *During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress.

Tuesday: Positive Affirmations *Your thoughts can give you power- to change your negative thinking patterns and replace them with positive thinking patterns

Wednesday: Mandala Colouring! – *Coloring mandalas is a form of art therapy meant to relieve stress and increase focus while exercising the brain and expressing creativity.

Thursday: Acts of Kindness –* Kindness creates a sense of belonging and it helps reduce stress and deepens friendships and it may improve feelings of confidence and optimism.

Friday: Classroom Conversation Starters – classroom teachers are using prompts during class meetings/restorative circles to help students understand how to help others and how to ask for help

· Please make sure to pack a hat and mitts!

· Please remind your child to bring, and wear, a jacket. Some students don’t like to wear their jackets at recess, even if they wore them to school.

· Please make sure your child has a pair of INDOOR SHOES – students will need to change their shoes when they come inside the classrooms so that we can help to keep our learning spaces clean and dry.

Student Safety

Please walk your child to school. This will eliminate many of the safety hazards we are seeing on the roads out front of the school. Parents who choose to drive their children to school are ask

School-wide January Deep Learning Skill: Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship.

As we step into the month of January at Christ the King School, our focus will be on fostering Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship among our students. These essential skills empower students to ask questions, share their opinions, and cultivate new ideas. We aim to inspire them to contribute solutions to real-world problems, nurturing leadership qualities, imagination, creativity, and the ability to motivate others.

Innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship are crucial skills for personal and academic growth, preparing students for the challenges and opportunities they will encounter in

the future. We encourage you to actively engage with your child at home by fostering an environment that supports these skills. Encourage them to explore, question, and share their thoughts, allowing their creativity to flourish.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in cultivating a dynamic and enriching educational experience for your child.

Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectation

Cold Weather – Proper Attire

The week ahead looks like a fridged one so please ensure your child has their warmest winter gear and an extra change of clothes.

As stated earlier: our Board’s policy, when the temperature is between -20°C and -27°C students will not be outside longer than 15 minutes.  When temperatures are colder than -27°C, students remain inside.

Please help make playing in the snow more enjoyable by ensuring your child has all the gear they need before they leave the house. It would be helpful for students to keep an extra pair of dry mittens, hat, and socks in their backpacks as well.
